Blackjack is a game that requires practice and patience. Not everyone can get involved in the game and desire to be successful overnight! Blackjack incorporates some detailed level of strategising as well as learning tricks of the trade.
Among the many moves and strategies employed in Blackjack, one of the most common practice is that of ‘Breaking Hand’. It is a simple move that many people get confused with another essential term used in the game – the ‘bust’. However, these two are significantly different from each other and have different implications in the game as well.
Blackjack is a simple game that involves players to compete against the dealer or the house as well as competitors on the table. It involves placing bets against a winning prospect where the dealt cards decide the fate of the player. A dealer deals cards to the player where the value of all the cards summed up should be near to a total of 21. The sum should never exceed the number 21, in which case it would be a loss for the player.
Breaking hand is essentially implied just before the last card is dealt with the player. It is at this very moment where it’s decided whether or not the player wins or loses the round.
In Blackjack, the hand dealt with the player constitutes the sum total of their individual values. Thus, if a player has been dealt cards with no aces in the hand or already has a hand that can exceed the number 21, then it is known as a ‘hard hand’ (or a breaking hand).
If there is an Ace in the hand among the cards, then the value of ace can be taken as ‘1’ instead of the usual ‘11’. This can be illustrated in this way:
If a player has already been dealt a 7 and an 8, and the next dealt card is an Ace, then, the value of the Ace is taken as 1 instead of 11. This is because if the value is taken as 11, then the sum total exceeds the number 21 (7 + 8 + 11 = 26, which is greater than 21. Instead if taken as 1, the sum becomes 7 + 8 + 1 = 16). In the latter case, the hand would be called as a ‘Hard 16’.
In both cases, the sum of the values of all the cards gets to be more than 21. This is where most players get confused and might possibly think that both cases mean the same and have the same implications.
However, this is not really the case. A ‘Bust’ is usually a fate where the current total of all the values exceeds 21. In this case, it would be a bust. However, a breaking hand is a potential chance of exceeding the number 21. Simply put, a breaking hand is a looming prospect where the player still has the option to stay or to call the next card.
In an ideal game of Blackjack, the player will have to take into account the possible chance of getting a Break Card. A Break Card is a potential card that can make the breaking hand convert to a bust (pushes the total over 21). A breaking hand allows a player to consider whether or not to stay or to call a card. However, it becomes a difficult ordeal to judge which option to go for, which may or may not lead to a bust and a total loss for the player.
This is where Blackjack strategies come into play. A lot many strategies have been devised that allows players to make the crucial decision to call a card or to opt for a stay. Strategies might not always be a fool-proof way of ensuring victory all the time, but they do allow the player to consider all the available opportunities to come to a close approximation of a sum of 21 and win the round eventually. Thus, Players are advised to learn a few strategies in order to improve their game strategy.
